City of Oxford Charity

Supporting Our Community & Empowering Lives in Oxford Since 1700.

Who We Are

At The City of Oxford Charity, we are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families across our vibrant city. Rooted in compassion and community, our mission is to provide vital support to those facing hardship and adversity.

The City of Oxford Charity has a proud and enduring legacy of serving the people of Oxford. Our origins date back to 1700, when local benefactors came together with a shared commitment to alleviate poverty and support the most vulnerable residents of our city. Over the decades, the charity has grown and evolved, responding to the changing needs of the community whilst staying true to its founding values of kindness, dignity and opportunity for all.

What We Do

Almshouse Accomodation

We maintain a number of historic almshouses which offer safe, comfortable, and affordable housing for Oxford residents in need. These homes are more than just shelter; they are also part of a supportive community.

Grants to Those in Need

We provide support to individuals and families facing challenging circumstances. Whether facing homelessness, domestic violence, job loss, medical emergencies, or other crises.

Educational Grants

We offer grants to support educational opportunities for young people from low-income backgrounds. These grants can help with course materials, school trips and essential equipment – ensuring financial hardship is not a barrier to learning.

Trustees and Governance

Overall responsibility for the governance and effective running of the Charity rests with its Trustees. The Charity depends on their commitment and expertise to ensure it fulfils its objectives.

The Charity may appoint co-opted Trustees, selected for their personal experience and professional expertise. In addition, there are up to six nominated Trustees from Oxford City Council, and two by the Council of the University of Oxford.

Trustees meet quarterly to review the Charity’s activities, receive reports from its committees, and make collective decisions. They serve on the following committees:

  • Finance and General Purposes
  • Grants (Relief in Need)
  • Grants (Education)
  • Stone’s Court (Almshouse Management)

Our Trustees bring a wide range of experience in areas such as housing, estates, finance, health care, and social support. As volunteers, they also play a key role in setting strategic priorities, ensuring financial sustainability, and overseeing the Charity’s performance.

While the role of Trustee can involve periods of focused work, it also offers a meaningful opportunity to give back to the City of Oxford.

From time to time, Trustee positions become available. The Charity is particularly keen to welcome younger individuals with relevant skills and experience to help shape its future.

If you are interested in becoming a Trustee, please contact the Charity’s Clerk at enquiries@oxfordcitycouncil.org.uk.
